The Devil's Hole - Niagara
Title; #560 - The Devil's Hole - Niagara
Geo. Barker, Photographer
Niagara Falls, New York

George Barker was active in Niagara Falls from the early 1860s until the late 1890s.
Barker's studio at Niagara Falls produced a large variety of views of the falls.
In the mid-1880s Underwood and Underwood became the distributor of Barker's views and continued to sell his views, usually with proper credit, as late as 1908.

This real photo view is in excellent condition.

The Devil's Hole is a geologic formation. After the last ice age a large creek poured over the gorge forming a large waterfall, separate from the Great Niagara Falls. It is now a State Park.
The Battle of Devil's Hole, or sometimes referred to as the Devil's Hole Massacre took place on September 14, 1763.

The world's first railway suspension bridge spanned 825 feet and stood 2.5 miles downstream of Niagara Falls from 1855-1897. It connected Ontario, Canada, with Niagara Falls, New York.
The bridge had two decks, the upper for trains and the lower for pedestrians and carriages. In this view you can see a steam locomotive on the top deck.
On August 27, 1897 the bridge was demolished and replaced with the Steel Arch Bridge, which was later renamed the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge.

E. & H.T. Anthony and Company were active from 1863 until 1889. They were a major publisher that employed many photographers. Most of the early New York views were done by Edward Anthony. Most notable is his series of New York City begun in 1859. These early views have square-cornered ivory mounts with paper labels on the reverse.
In 1862 Anthony joined with brother Henry to form E. & H.T. Anthony. From 1863 to 1874 they produced dozens of series - one of which was the Central Park Views

The cast iron Bow Bridge spans 60 feet across the Lake at its narrowest point. This view shows the eight (8) cast iron urns that disappeared in the early 1920s.

Luna Island & Falls
Title; #1062 - Luna Island and Falls, Niagara Falls
Webster & Albee, Publishers, Rochester, N.Y.
Artistic American Scenery

Webster and Albee were active in Rochester, New York from the 1880s until the 1890s. They were a major publisher of pirated copies of views. Much activity in printing copy views was centered in Rochester - Union View Company, C.W. Woodward and Webster and Albee issued huge quantities. Confusion exists because Webster and Albee also issued views from original negatives, but often the quality was low.

This oversize view (4 1/8" wide instead of the usual 3 1/2") features Luna Island - a very small, uninhabited island which, together with Goat Island borders the Bridal Veil Falls. Luna Island was said to have derived it's name from the ability of an observer, when standing on the island during a full moon, to see "Lunar Rainbows" in the Niagara mist.
