GEISHA GIRL PORCELAIN

Geisha Girl Porcelain is a Japanese export ware whose production commenced the last quarter of the 19th century. Made in the form of the common dining and household utensils of the times, they featured lovely kimono clad ladies, sometimes with men and children, in scenes from pre-modern Japan.
Early catalogs described the wares as depicting Japanese figures, dancing girls, geisha dancers, etc., but for a long time the wares had no formal name. Gradually they became known as Geisha Girl Porcelain.
The name is derived from the Western habit of calling any pretty lady in Japanese art a geisha, due to the notion that the geisha are the most lovely and intriguing of Japanese women.
Over two hundred Geisha Girl scenes, or patterns, and variations thereof have been catalogued and new variations periodically come to light.
The diversity of Geisha ware is a great attraction to collectors. Not only is there a variety of patterns, but border colors, shapes and sizes all present an array of possibilities.
Pattern names, when available, have been taken from The Collector's Encyclopedia of Geisha Girl Porcelain by Elyce Litts.
A note for those who love the look but are not very familiar with Geisha Girl Porcelain - The porcelain is not high quality and, while it is all handpainted, the center scene, or pattern, is usually very well done but the border painting can be rather sloppy at times.
To a Geisha Girl collector this just adds to the charm!
